Motivation, Direction, Inspiration

Motivation, Direction, Inspiration

By Vishnu Annapareddy, Centurion Organisation, Malaysia

Do any of these statements resonate with you?

• I don't feel motivated anymore to go to work
• I am not sure what I am doing and what I need to do
• I don't feel inspired anymore

I want to be honest with you. I have faced all these questions at different points in my career. I have been fortunate to have great mentors throughout my career who have helped me to figure out a few techniques to help me stay driven and focused on my goals. These mentors have helped me to make decisions and feel inspired to achieve more.

Motivation
When you find yourself in a place where you are not sure about your personal motivation, I strongly suggest you look at your personal goals.

A good question is: "Do I have personal goals?" If the answer is “Yes” then maybe they need a re-evaluation. If the answer is “No” then I strongly believe now is the right time to set some personal goals, which will help to kick-start your motivation.

In June this year, we have Hari Raya, one of Malaysia’s biggest festivals. I am always motivated about festival periods because I traditionally send money and gifts to my parents during these periods. So I need to ensure I work hard and achieve my sales targets so I can fulfil this personal goal – it helps me to stay focused.

Direction
I struggle sometimes with making decisions and I’ve learned that’s normally to do with lack of direction. A good solution for lack of direction is to set business goals. I remember setting a goal to progress through Appco’s defined career development path, moving from an Assistant Owner to become an Owner Partner and this gave me clear direction. That direction in turn guided me to make the right decisions keeping my business goal in mind.

Inspiration
This is a very personal thing. Like many, I found it difficult to differentiate between inspiration and motivation. One day I called James Greaves, Vice President and Executive Director of Appco Group Asia and I asked him his views on inspiration and motivation. He said: “Motivation is having personal goals and going after them”. “Inspiration is looking at hardworking people who are achieving their goals. If you want to feel inspired then hang out with inspiring people who are achieving their goals”.

If you can motivate yourself through your personal goals, have direction by setting business goals and surround yourself with inspiring people then there is nothing out there that can stop you from becoming successful.
