Seizing opportunities in 2014

Seizing opportunities in 2014

As we come towards the end of the first quarter, 2014 is shaping up to be an eventful year that promises growth opportunities for many. The key to seizing these opportunities is to be prepared. A number of successful people talk about luck – being in the right place at the right time. But what they don’t tell you is that most of these people were prepared to seize the opportunity that presented itself. If you aspire to be a designer but don’t hone in on your skills to showcase to potential employers or investors at the drop of a hat, an opportunity to prove your worth would only be a wasted one. As the famous saying by a roman stoic philosopher goes; “luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”

I thought I’d give you my top four tips that will hopefully give you a kick start to seizing the opportunities that 2014 are set to present to you.

Know where you’re going
We are early into a brand new year and while everyone else is resetting or forgetting their New Year’s resolutions it’s important that you’ve got your goals clearly laid out. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail so ensure you have your year planned out with both smart (what you absolutely will achieve regardless of setbacks and external conditions) and stretch targets (what you could achieve if everything goes well).

Set the pace
Be strong in your chosen field, take on new challenges and learn new things. You should be constantly striving to improve yourself. As the famous British author W. Somerset Maugham once said; “it is funny about life: if you refuse to accept anything but the very best, you will very often get it.”

Maintain your composure
Nothing goes your way all the time. When your plan goes off track, remember to maintain your attitude and get help if you need it. Everyone that has succeeded has dealt with what you’re dealing with at some point and managed to work it out. If they can, then so can you.

Seek out success and network
The more high-performers you network with, the better you will do. Period. There will always be something that can be improved and there will always be someone that can teach it to you. Don’t wait for it to come to you, go out and find it.
